I met this team of young cyclists in my hotel just before their training on the highlands. This series will complete my previous series of the Eritrean cycling team made in 2010 in Massawa by the red sea.
Cycling is the most popular sport in Eritrea.
The best racers participate to various international tournaments around the world and in Europe where they are really coveted.
Some rumours (as many of them in Eritrea…) report that some sportmen took the opportunity of participating in international tournaments in Africa and in Europe to escape the country and that the government took some financial actions against their family to avoid this phenomenon. Having said that, when cycling champions like Daniel Teklehaimanot come back to Eritrea, they are acclaimed like heroes and don’t seem interested to leave their country once and for all.
